A death row convict who made a “mistake” with their last meal endured a “painful” execution.

Who had been on death row since 2004, was found guilty of raping and murdering 16-year-old Jennifer Long back in 1998.

The killer also cruelly murdered Mary Bales, 80, after bashing her with a claw hammer but he faced justice after neighbours witnessed him attempting to burn her body.

He was arrested before being found guilty of the double murder and sent on death row in January 2024.

Purkey had chosen pecan pie as his farewell supper but begged cops to hold it for him for later, seemingly ignorant that there would be no later for him.

Medical expert Dr. Gail Van Norman stated that Purkey most likely died a “painful” death instead than the planned painless one when it came time for his execution.

According to the Death Penalty Information Center, Purkey’s autopsy showed that he had experienced an abrupt buildup of fluid in both lungs, which would have caused him to cough up frothy, pink sputum and have trouble breathing.

The filling of Purkey’s lungs could only have occurred while he was still alive, according to Van Norman,

And the inmate would likely experience a near drowning ‘among the most excruciating feelings known to man’.

The majority of prisoners, if not all of them, would suffer from severe pain, including feelings of drowning and suffocation, due to [the deadly injectable chemical] pentobarbital, he said.

Jennifer Long, Purkey’s first victim, vanished after being last observed on January 22, 1998, at East High School in Kansas City, Missouri.

Before taking her back to his house, Purkey had allegedly enticed her into his car, where he fatally stabbed her and used a chainsaw to dismember her body.

After that, the murderer allegedly burned her body in a fireplace before burying her bones in a Clearwater, Kansas, sewage pond.

However, Long’s remains have not yet been located.Purkey seems to express regret for his acts before to his execution.
