Recently inaugurated Attorney General Pam Bondi declared on Wednesday that the Trump administration has commenced legal proceedings against New York State, Governor Kathy Hochul, and Attorney General Letitia James.
The lawsuit contends that these state officials have breached federal law by intentionally protecting illegal immigrants. In a vigorous press conference, Bondi stated, ‘This is a new Department of Justice. New York has opted to prioritize illegal aliens over American citizens. This must end. It ends today.’
This legal action, which also implicates Mark Schroeder, the commissioner of the New York Department of Motor Vehicles, focuses on New York’s contentious ‘Green Light’ laws—legislation that allows undocumented immigrants to acquire driver’s licenses.
Bondi contended that by implementing these laws, New York is essentially providing undocumented individuals a ‘green light’ to live in the state without facing comprehensive oversight from federal law enforcement, as officers are prohibited from accessing driver’s license databases during standard traffic stops.
